Dr. Suat Günsel Cup International Basketball Tournament has been completed…CB Avenida is the Champion

Hosted by the Near East University, the Dr. Suat Günsel Cup International Basketball Tournament has come to an end. Highly esteemed basketball teams came to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus for this tournament. As a result of the four day lasting tournament, CB Avenida from Spain and the Near East University qualified for the final. At the final match on Sunday CB Avenida defeated the Near East University with a score of 61-56 and won the Dr. Suat Günsel Cup. With this outcome, the Near East University came the first runner up of the tournament.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of Near East University, the ranking of the participating teams is as follows:

1. CB Avenida (Champion)

2. Near East University

3. USK Prague

4. Hatay BŞB

5. Castors Braine

6. Galatasaray

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Near East University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Irfan Günsel presented the championship cup to CB Avenida whereas Vice Rector of the Near East University Prof. Dr. Fahreddin Sadıkoğlu presented the first runner cup to the NEU Women’s Basketball Team.

The most valuable player of the tournament is from CB Avenida…

Maria Asurmendi from CB Avenida has been promoted as the most valuable player of the tournament. The other standouts are as follows: NEU’s Quanitra Hollingsworth as the leading scorer; USK Prague’s Elena Hanusova as the highest rebound; NEU’s Olcay Çakır Turgut as the assist leader.

Upon the completion of the four day lasting tournament, the referees and the Chief Coaches of the participating teams of the tournament were presented plaques of appreciation. In recognition of their contribution to the tournament, a plaque was also presented to BRT.

At the first match of the last day of the tournament, Castors Braine defeated Galatasaray 69 – 64…

For the first match of the last day of the tournament, Castors Braine faced Galatasaray to be qualified for the fifth and the sixth places. Castors Braine won the match 69-64 and qualified the fifth rank.

The third and fourth places of the tournament, USK Prague defetaed Hatay BŞB 82-66…

USK Prague faced Hatay BŞB to be qualified as the third or fourth of the tournament and consequently, USK Prague defeated Hatay BŞB 82-66 and has qualified as the third of the tournament.

It was a very high tempo match and it was the scene of breath taking moments. Both teams fought toe to toe to be the winner of the match. However, the versatile players of the USK Prague such as Rezan, Katerina Elhatova and Sargay got inside the paint and drove the ball to basket. Throughout the periods, USK Prague kept dominating the match by exhibiting high performance and won the match with a score of 82-66.
