Near East University Women’s Basketball Team, champion of the FIBA Women’s European Cup, returned to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with the Cup.
Following the Turkey Cup, the Near East Angels, also winning the European Cup, were met by a huge group of enthusiastic and affectionate fans at the Ercan Airport.
A group of students hung flowers on the necks of the team players just after their passport processing. The crowd gathered at the arrivals gate of Ercan Airport shouted congratulatory slogans. The Near East Angels were greeted with cheers and confetti.
In the meeting where the media showed great interest, the fans took photographs with the players.
Official visits realized …
Near East University Women’s Basketball Team started official visits after coming to the island. The team first visited President Mustafa Akıncı and Prime Minister Hüseyin Özgürgün. Later on, they visited the Turkish Ambassador Derya Kanbay and Sibel Siber, the President of the Republic Assembly.
According to the statement made by the Press and Public Relations Directorate of the Near East University, it was emphasized that the achievements of the Near East University regarded as the great achievements in promoting the country and the best example for breaking the embargoers.
Ambassador Derya Kanbay: “A success which must be remembered for years”
Turkey’s Ambassador to Nicosia, Derya Kanbay, stated that he was much delighted from the success of the NEU team and congratulated everybody contributing the success, inlcuding the captain and coach.
Ambassador Kanbay emphasized that this success must be remembered for years, expressing that this proud belongs not only to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus but also to Turkey.
Parliament President Siber Siber: “Near East University has made the greatest presentation with this success …”
Parliament President Sibel Siber said that they are proud of this success, by congratulating the team and their success. Siber stated that the country needs success stories such as this and that such success stories also raise the sense of belonging.
Plaque presented …
At the end of the visit, President of the Republic Parliament Sibel Siber, honoured the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Near East University, Assoc. Dr. İfan Günsel, by presenting a plaque to him; Team Leader Bahar Çağlar also gave Sibel Siber a basketball ball signed with her signature.
Angels Meet with Fans in Signature Event …
After the breakfast, Near East University Women’s Basketball Team met with students and supporters at the event of the signing day organized by NEU at the RA 25 Sports Hall.
Speaking before the event, Team Leader Bahar Çağlar said that they were very happy as a team and that they wwould experience many championships under the name of Near East University.
